5 Libertarian Movies for Liberty Lovers

This is a non-comprehensive list of badass movies any liberty lover will enjoy. Many of the movies on this list sit at the top of my personal all-time favorites list. I will admit some are not as heavy on the libertarian themes as other, they will be worth the watch nonetheless.

1.
Idiocracy

While on the surface this movie may not seem libertarian, it does point out all the issue overbearing governments face over time. The idea that the welfare state encourages the uneducated and unskilled to procreate art rates that dwarf that educated and thoughtful.

2.
The Giver

This liberal utopia sheds light on the issues with building the “perfect community”, that many on the far left solicit. The community looks beautiful and ordered, and not long into the movie you start to get a glimpse of some of the trade-offs. Mandatory injections is one of such trade-offs that will set off your alarm bells. These injections help keep the population docile and compliant. The injections do this through limiting citizens exposure to emotions, pain, color, and individuality… basically the nightmare that SJWs demand. The Giver beautifully and artfully addresses many of the failures of socialist utopia ideology, and shows no such institution can last forever against the freedom that humans instinctively crave.

3.
Braveheart

William Wallace is the ultimate libertarian. Mel Gibson starred and directed this cult classic. While it is not the most historically accurate movie. William Wallace does carry symbolic importance in Scottish history, and did furiously fight against English rule. You can find the libertarian spirit throughout this movie. After the English rulers execute William’s new wife, violating the NAP, he rallies the community and slaughters all of the local English rulers and their enforcers. This angers the King who sends his own son to deal with the uprising. William continues to draw support from surrounding communities and battle the unwelcome rulers. Against even the worst possible circumstances, William Wallace clings to “FREEDOM!”

4.
Red Dawn (1984)

Red Dawn is a very 80’s movie where the communist are the baddies. China and Russia invade the US and local high-school students adapt guerilla tactics and put up one hell of a fight. I will admit I am a little biased on this one, and the libertarian ideas are not quite as pronounced. However, it is a badass movie, and it really shows the power of the people. When freedom haters ask how I am going to fight the government with a little ol’ rifle, I start with the .50 cal argument, then move on to laying out some of the guerilla strategy displayed in this movie. On top of that, they did a great job on the accuracy of the firearms. Highly recommended.

5.
Eyes Wide Shut

Stanley Kubrick is a master at making deep movies that are loaded with many hidden meanings. If the stories around Eyes Wide Shut are true, what it exposes and should have exposed falls in line with what many believe about the elite. Stanley Kubrick showed his final cut to Warner Brothers and died four days later. The studio removed 21-25 minutes and released the film. Some argue those minutes would have exposed the elite. I believe regardless of what is in those cuts, they have been exposed.

**LAURA’S KID’S RECOMMENDATION** The Lego Movie

My 3-year-old is obsessed with the Lego Batman, video game, so I thought we would give The Lego Movie a try. Watching it from a distance, I was shocked at the values it was displaying. It promotes thinking outside of the box and creative freedom. The “bad guy” in the movie is the perfect example of overbearing government (or cronyism), controlling all building processes, and banning free creation. It is not the typical Liberal malarkey they are trying to push on our children.
Some conservatives seem to have gotten a different message than I did: that business is bad, and government is good. I saw it as cronyism being the enemy and free thought winning in the end. Chris Pratt voices the main character and as most of us know, he is not a Liberal, and has been seen wearing “Don’t Tread on me” apparel and likes his guns.

Tony Winkler

I love freedom, guns, tits, and booze.
